Yes, it's the publication's followers that makes a difference - at least at the moment. And in the future, the independent verification that your work is up to standard to be accepted by the publication, which I think is why Tony wants to reward some of the editors, as gatekeepers. Things like your weird workplace stories could go in a publication, just to keep them together - but then it does the same thing as a list.
