Yes, it does vary between editors and the reason I grumbled, was because I felt this one was overstepping the mark.

Their submission guidelines suggest using the free Grammarly software and 'your own two eyes', recognising the limitations of software. But this editor is completely enslaved to a completely different bit of software. Just weird.

And their guidelines also say, "Our editors do the best they can to correct wrong spelling, fix typos, and add missing letters without overstepping their boundaries of interfering with your creative freedom."

I felt this editor was overstepping a lot. She was basically calling for a rewrite and I was stupid enough to comply. :-)
