Yes, comments are lovely when they're nice. I think I overstepped the mark on one of my stories and have been feeling the rage from some quarters - who I don't think actually read it in full. So I've toned it down and turned off the comments on that one. I think comments can increase the read time sometimes because people stay longer to read the comments. It's also nice to get feedback most of the time, as you say!
