Well, according to some jumped up folk who I encountered on Medium a while ago, rewriting without referencing your source is a form of plagiarism, and is mentioned in the Medium rules (I checked - they're right). So you should probably mention the source - but I'm not sure if you need both writer and publication. I tend to just link to things these days.

I didn't used to think rewrites were plagiarism, because I believed plagiarism was copy and paste, but apparently, modern definitions extend to rewrites where you don't cite the source. So always better to cite the source.

Of course, it's even better to draw on multiple sources and add your own twist. But you know... we probably only earn 50 cents, so I wouldn't worry too much about reinventing the wheel. Just do what you like. :)
