Trouble is, we don't have time to develop and replace the technologies needed to carry on as normal. I think we need both approaches. I also think you're right that people won't change, which means we're doomed. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to do our bit.

And if everyone turned their engines off while stationary, it'd amount to a significant reduction in localised pollution as well as greenhouse gases. It'd be better still if cutting the engine while stationary had been built into vehicle design 10 years ago, so that now, *all* vehicles do it automatically. Rather than just a few fancy ones.
