This makes sense. But I do know two people who are earning as usual on tech stories, so there are some people unaffected. Also, I wonder if I were to write tech, would careful tagging get it distributed to a tech audience? I don't know, but I think it's got to be worth a try. However, I heed your warning and understand this could fail. Hopefully my current audience won't mind a bit of tech. They're a versatile lot.

BTW, they're not banning meta - they're just proposing to ban us putting it behind a paywall (eg disincentivising it)
