This is why, despite advice to the contrary, I always kept in touch with my parents, even at arms length. My childhood was different. Not as chaotic, but bad in other ways. I have regrets about things I cannot change, and I don't want cutting off my parents to be one of them. Dad's died now anyway. Sometimes I've wanted to cut them off, but I have too many regrets already. This is very wise advice.
