The one thing that seems to be consistent with most of these instances is a refusal to discuss it. So they never really understood that they were wrong. That seems to be a characteristic of the situations. As you say, a short conversation would clear it up, but people have decided what they think already and I never got a defence. These days, I will try harder, but some people still won't listen.
