A lot of people think it's essential. It's even on the government's nutrition plate! They'll argue this point while arguing that sugar is an essential nutrient. I know why it's on the government's nutrition plate - and it's not because it's essential. It's because the plate is realistic - in the sense that it recognises people do eat this shit, but it should be a small amount relative to everything else.
