Proportional representation simply means that the number of MPs in parliament is proportional to the number of people who voted for them. e.g. If 50% of people voted Labour, then Labour would have 50% of the seats. It has nothing to do with ideology, unless you consider proportional representation to be an ideology, and then, I guess, it does.
