Poor bug! I wondered why the worm didn't drown, too. They can survive underwater for days, apparently. Although before I put it outside, it had gone limp, so I think I may have accidentally killed it. I added some water to the jar because I didn't want it to dry out, and was unsure if it was aquatic. It then went limp. But you know.... it had been underwater in the toilet bowl for goodness knows how long! So I didn't think it drowning was a likely issue.
