People just want more stuff and have short term outlooks. Governments encourage short term thinking because they are elected for short periods. It means our whole society is geared to the short term, and telling people they have to change would be unpopular and get them voted out. Even people who claim to care don't seem to behave like they do.

The woman who invited me to join her climate action group a few years ago and opened my eyes to how bad things were, has just posted on Facebook that she is currently holidaying in Bali and will be off to New Zealand soon. That is the other side of the world. It would not be possible to book a more long-haul flight.

Meanwhile, my husband and I haven't flown for 20 years. And we're still trying to cut back. But we are weird, and she is normal. Here lies the problem.
