LOL. Well thank you. That's good advice, but the question is, where? Because I only came over to Medium because the jobs in freelance journalism are collapsing. And journos are being laid off as well, I assume to be replaced by AI. So I tried book publishing and found it painful.

I came to Medium and decided it was easier to make money here than in book publishing. That says a lot about book publishing.

I stayed because I got addicted. Now I'm not sure what to do. Because I'd love to knock on the doors of magazines and newspapers and be welcomed in, but it’s virtually impossible to get into some of them. I have a fantastic story suited to the Daily Telegraph, if only they would respond to my emails.

At least on Medium someone talks to me. The money's crap but people don't ignore you. That's nice.

Which I guess means, it's not all about the money. I enjoy it, obviously. Wouldn't keep turning up if I hated it, would I? That would be stupid. :)

But yes, earnings are a part of it. There’s a certain commitment to treating it like a job. Although 50 hour weeks weren’t supposed to be part of the equation, and I’d love to hit four figures!
