I've just interviewed a lady who rents incubators for chick breeding. her argument is basically what you just said - people are disconnected from animals and don't care. Her service to schools and retirement homes makes people think about their food, and gives them a connection with animals. I can see both arguments - I'd personally rather people gave a home to ex-battery hens than breeding new ones, but she also has a point about people connecting with animals.
