I've had boosted stories do much worse than ones that went naturally viral. I've done a lot of analysis on payment per read and I think the biggest factor is how often someone reads your work. New eyes on your stories will pay more than regular readers. But there's another theory that there's a pool of money that gets split every day. It doesn't however explain how individual reads show a consistency and pattern, which declines the more an individual reads the same author.
