I've done a lot of analysis and think they're reducing the benefits for those who focus on reading each other's work the whole time, so while it's nice to have core supporters, reaching new readers is really important too. I've come to the same conclusion as you. Read moderately in what you're interested in.... because those who try to read everything within a certain group then don't get paid much are following the wrong route.
