It's been a topic of debate in the UK for years. Not so much student debt as student fees. University used to be free - then everyone complained that the people benefitting from it were earning higher salaries, so should pay the fees.

So eventually they introduced fees, but that was at a stage when almost everyone went on to university.

Now, my understanding is that not everyone has to repay their student debt - it depends on their circumstances.
