But the in-between accounts, where authors make their “medium” sized payouts (ba-dum-tiss) by reading and engaging prolifically, creating a network of people who also read and engage prolifically, might be a thing of the past.

Indeed. Some of the retired people who liked to spend all day on here have been burnt. Pity, but hopefully they'll bounce back. RC is commenting occasionally again. :) More selective now, I think.
