In the modern world people can identify as whatever they like anyway. It's what's in his heart that's important. It sounds like he wasn't upset, which is the best possible outcome, I think. He can go through traditions, if he wants to later, for formal conversion. Or he can just know the truth in his heart, and I expect that'll be fine too. You did well. :-)
