I'm pretty sure these drugs were designed for pharmaceutical use, for exactly what you describe in part of this text - being able to release and process negative emotions without the ego getting in the way. They were intended to be used as an adjunct to talking therapies, but got banned when recreational use got out of control and addiction became a problem. It's interesting to read about your experiences.
