I'd suggest you look out for submissions by solid writers that you're familiar with in your publications, rather than trying to consider everything for the 'featured slot'. I've analysed my featured articles and the advantage is minimal, but it might be better on your publication, as you probably have more followers. I wouldn't create more work for yourself. Just feature anything that stands out. And yes, you can feature your own.
