I was thinking about this, and the only thing would be - the guards and stuff. If the palaces didn't have guards they wouldn't offer the same experience. A dead empty palace is not the same as a living experience. But then, you could have guards for show, and it would still be cheaper than funding the royal family. Nonetheless, they do a lot of good and I don't begrudge them.
