I think they would have done it over the phone, but anyway, I wrote the book in question under a pseudonym for a reason, so declined the opportunity. Yes, the internet is cheap and effective. I'm not sure small publishers have a lot to add to self-publishing, if someone's reasonably competent at putting their own thing together.
