I think the idea is to nurture an understanding of different cultures and beliefs in children, so they grow up understanding different religions, ways of life, and hopefully respecting them - rather than being ignorant or prejudiced. Not that I felt much sunk in when I was at school, or that I cared! I thought, I'd chosen my religion already, so it was all rather pointless.
