I think that's why they do it. They want you to find new writers and publications outside of your following. It has merits, but they allowed us to keep it on 'following until quite recently'. I used to find my following feed so much more interesting, and had it stuck on that for ages. You still find new writers through publications, and you still find new publications through writers you follow, so it sort of works to make new introductions either way.
