I think it's just that they are just easier to please, simpler, and you don't need to do anything complicated to achieve their loyalty.

My guinea pigs only like me because I feed them, but love is over stating things, even then. They are very wary and don't like to be touched, but they will tolerate a stroke, especially when food is on offer. 😆

It's a mutually beneficial relationship.
