I think Christmas cards became popular in Victorian times, a trend started by Queen Victoria that caught on.

Then of course, like everything in the modern world, it got ridiculous and everyone has to send everyone cards - because if you don't do that at school you get bullied, and so it goes on. Or at least that was how it was at school for me - social pressure to spend the little money I had on cheap cards.
