I read this ages ago and am just revisiting. I'm not sure whether the reads clock up the next day, because for it to be an accurate proportion of the monthly fee, the month would have to conclude, so that the software could work out the correct proportion. Even the reader doesn't know how much they will read in a month until the end of the month. So, I don't know how they work this out. I'm not entirely sure if it's paid or not when a member reads from a twitter link.

Funny thing is, I have a feeling that some stories aren’t accruing earnings even when they are read by members within Medium. I thought I might experiment with a friend who's got a story that no one is reading. See if they get a few cents for my read.
