I quit my job to write full time in 2011 for magazines, and my dad came round to tell me I'd fail. It's a battle to get people to share your vision, but I did what I wanted anyway, and they came round and appeared in a few articles in the end. I'm glad your parents are supportive. Maybe you just need to tell people you're a writer, full stop. A job. No one outside the home has ever questioned that I'm a writer.
