I had the bad luck to fail the 11+ exam and went to the alternative - honestly, it wasn't great either. It was full of bullies. But I did get a sense that the grammar schools were elitist though, and one of my sisters bought into all that and came out of it with a superiority complex, looking down her nose at me.
