I go through the getting a new pet stage every 5-6 years, because that's how long the guinea pigs live, and while you always hope the newcomers will fill the hole left by their predecessor, they never quite do. Not immediately. It takes years to build that trust and bond, but we get there again eventually, and then they die and it all starts again.
