I do think this was the intention. It blew up on impact, but I guess he'd hoped it wouldn't and he'd survive the experience. Heading for a field was probably part of their training. But he *could* have bailed out with the others and let it crash wherever it landed. He didn't. The others survived, so there was obviously a known risk and time to escape.
