I am amazed that anyone would consider this anything other than a commercial egg producer. This is not what I'd consider 'backyard'. My husband likes the occasional egg. We get them from a lady who keeps about 6-8 hens in her back garden. They are locked in when there are bird flu outbreaks because it's the law, but otherwise they have the run of the lawn. They live out their full lives. They are rescues who come from commercial farms, where the chickens would be slaughtered if they weren't adopted by 'backyard' keepers. This is what I consider a backyard keeper. Someone who cannot keep up with demand because it really is a pet flock in a garden, who've probably been rescued. So no dead roosters that would have otherwise lived.

I guess different people have different ideas of what is a backyard flock.
