I actually think they have an important role in conservation now. A lot of wildlife parks are involved in breeding programmes to protect species that might otherwise go extinct.
The situation in the wild is so dire for many species, it's not ideal, but it's ensuring their survival.
Yes, there are sanctuaries, but there's also a lot of poaching. It would be nice if one day all wild animals lived in protected places and we could visit them in their habitat or watch them on screens, but for now, I think the conservation role is important.
But saying that, I also think some places put too much emphasis on pleasing humans. For example, at West Mids Safari park, they allow people to feed the animals, resulting in huge tailbacks, and animals being exposed to a lot of traffic fumes. It's bad for the animals and irritating for the humans who aren't engaged in feeding.
Some others, like a controversial Zoo in the Lake District, I've seen them on TV and it's all about what the public would enjoy rather than what's best for the animals. So I have mixed feelings, but I do support them.
