Hello AP! I usually submit to publications, but I've seen people argue recently that there's little benefit because our recommendations are based on reading history and tags. So it's worth experimenting. I still like publications, but I've started self-publishing a few things, and during vacation is a good time to do it.

I think it definitely is more successful when you have a good few followers, but then so is publishing in publications. Also, some publications accept self-published stories, so you can always add them to a publication later. We're taking holidays, but sticking to quiet outdoor attractions and avoiding everyone. We have a caravan, so can pretty much be self-sufficient and contact free!
