Getty don't purchase images. They are a licencing website, that photographers submit photographs to. Getty manages the sales to big media companies like the BBC. Photos that Getty are authorised to sell are covered by copyright and if they see images being used without permission, they will pursue payment for unauthorised use. The income will then be split with the photographer who submitted the image to their website. At least, I think that's how it works.
