Funny thing is, the two biggest publications on Medium often deliver very few reads when I publish through them. I think it can help to be in publications, but the size seems to matter less now than it once did. The important thing is how engaged the publications readers are. The Writing Cooperative (200k) and the Start Up (700K) have published some of my biggest flops!
