This is really interesting. I write a lot of Medium stories because no one reads anything else. I had months here earning nothing at the start, until I wrote one Medium story and bam - my reads blew up. I've tended to share my opinions on the platform since then, because the pets, health, all the other things I write about that you mention mostly do absolutely nothing, or very little. I certainly never came here to write about Medium, or writing for that matter. My first story was about a nurse in WWII.

I would love to write about other topics and be able to get readers. The other stories only get circulated when they are boosted.

I know a solid history writer has been affected and she never wrote about Medium, except for this one occasion to tell us what's been happening to her.
