As Medium's introduction to the site is totally devoid of any instruction, I think a lot of people don't know you can clap more than once. And even then, they wouldn't know that holding the key down is a way of reaching 50 without getting RSI. I only found out because someone tweeted about it. One clap was a way of showing my appreciation at a time when I didn't know there was an alternative - nothing more, nothing less.
